Native to the Azores, the Madeira Islands, the Canary Islands and western Europe (i.e. the UK, France, Portugal, Spain and Italy).
Widely naturalised in southern and eastern Australia (i.e. in many parts of Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia the coastal and sub-coastal districts of south-western Western Australia). Also naturalised naturalised on Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island.
Widely naturalised overseas in southern Africa, New Zealand, North America (i.e. eastern Canada and the USA), southern South America and many Pacific islands (i.e. Hawaii, Melanesia and Polynesia).
Twiggy mullein (Verbascum virgatum) is regarded as a significant environmental weed in Victoria, and as a minor environmental weed or potential environmental weed in other parts of Australia.
