Geographical distribution

South and Southeast Asia: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Rest of the world: Madagascar.

Morphology

A densely tufted annual or perennial; to 30—100—cm—tall.

Stem: smooth and partitioned across, hollow, approximately circular in any cross section and varying diameter.

Leaf: reduced to bladeless, straw-colored to brown and obliquely truncate sheath.

Inflorescence: 7—30 ovoid to oblong spikelets; spikelets 8—17—mm—long located mid-point or near base of stem.

Fruit: obovoid, black, and shining nut, 3—angled, 1.5—mm—long.

Biology and ecology

Prefers wet swampy areas and lowland rice fields. 

Agricultural importance

Widely distributed: however, its importance as a weed in rice is unclear.
