Origin
Native to southern Africa (i.e. western Cape Province in South Africa).
Naturalised Distribution
This species is relatively widespread in some parts of southern Australia (i.e. in the coastal districts of south-western Western Australia and in south-eastern South Australia). It has also been recorded near Melbourne in southern Victoria, in New South Wales and in other parts of South Australia, though it is no longer present or may not be fully naturalised in these regions.
Also naturalised overseas in New Zealand and south-western USA (i.e. California).
Notes
Fragrant watsonia (Watsonia marginata) is regarded as an environmental weed in Western Australia and as a minor or potential environmental weed in Victoria.
