Native to tropical and southern Africa (i.e. Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, Zaire, Sierra Leone, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa), the Azores, the Madeira Islands and the Canary Islands.
Naturalised Distribution
Widely naturalised in eastern Australia (i.e. in south-eastern Queensland, in central and southern New South Wales, in southern Victoria and in south-eastern South Australia). Also naturalised on Norfolk Island and possibly naturalised in Tasmania.
Also widely naturalised overseas, including in Europe, New Zealand and parts of the USA (i.e. California, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia).
Notes
Garden selaginella (Selaginella kraussiana) is regarded as an environmental weed in Victoria and New South Wales.
